Marketing Your Own Business is Hard

You know the basics of marketing. You do great work, and your clients love you. For some reason, though, you can’t seem to market your own business. I hear this ALL the time from my clients! It’s one of the two reasons they reach out to work with us. Either they have a hard time marketing their own business, or they don’t have time to do it consistently.

We get it! We can make our clients look good all day long, but when it comes to writing our own blogs and posting on social media… it feels difficult and a lot less natural.

For some people, I think it comes down to humility. They were taught not to brag as children. Showcasing themselves on social media may make them feel boastful, embarrassed, or uncomfortable.

Below are some other reasons you might find it hard to market your own business:

  1. You’re scared of hurting your brand.
You feel like if you post the wrong things, you might make yourself and your brand look foolish or out of touch.

  2. You don’t know what to say or share.
Your uncertainty leads to silence - you figure it’s better to say nothing than waste your time on writer’s block.

  3. You only have so many hours in a day.
Small business owners are busy, and marketing can’t always make the cut! Especially, since your focus is RIGHTLY on your clients.

  4. You don’t have high-quality images to share.
Everyone else’s photos looked more styled, crisp, and on-trend than yours, so you shy away from sharing. (This problem is easily fixed!)

All of the reasons listed above are valid. However, for your business to not only survive but thrive, we all need some form of marketing in today’s business climate.

We believe there are only three ways to ensure your business’s true potential is being showcased.

  1. Hire someone else to make you look good.
Whether an employee or an outside partner, assign a dedicated person who creates, curates, and manages your content.

  2. Manage your own marketing.
If you have the time, talent, and passion, it’s perfectly okay to market your own company. Plenty of small business owners do it well!

  3. Don’t do any marketing.
It may sound unheard of, but never discredit the power of wowing your clients and getting referrals through word of mouth!

Which marketing method do you use? Any one of these systems can be successful if executed well. Whatever path you choose, I wish you and your business all the best!
